In(ter)dependence Day
an alternate july celebration
Summertime greetings,
There are things about the 4th of July that have never felt quite right to me. For one thing, celebrating “bombs bursting in air” is less than life-affirming. Plus, the very narrow view of “independence” on which this country was founded holds a legacy of trauma that has yet to be healed.
Over the years I’ve noticed that claims to be ‘independent’ often overlook the very nature of life and liberty. Because, while each of us certainly possesses a quality of individual sovereignty, our very existence depends on and is shaped by countless other beings.
This week, rather than commemorating independence, we could instead celebrate interdependence: our innate, ever-present connection with all of life—however obvious, subtle, or seemingly invisible that connection may seem.
It seems fitting that our latest podcast episode explores the essence of conscious communication, a practice that honors both sovereignty and interconnectedness in our human interactions. Please join Lisa Fitzhugh and me in becoming more mindful of how we communicate in our myriad relationships…
This week and always, may we feel and act from the truth of our interdependence!
